Is it normal for a tragus piercing to do this?

About 4 days ago i got a tragus piercing on both ears. I expected some pain but i had no idea what i would be in for. The left ear hurt quite a bit but the lady got the earring in just fine. The right ear hurt 5 times worse and was in more pain than the left one even after the earrings were in. The rest of the evening, i had a big headache. The next day, the headache had reduced quite a bit and obviously they hurt and were a little swollen, which i expected. That evening i barely bumped the one on the right ear while combing my hair and it hurt alot. Within an hour it was VERY swollen and painful and was effecting my jaw a little. The next morning, it was the same; maybe a bit worse because i’m sure i slept on it at some point. This is day 3 of this huge swelling (so much so that the skin is stretched to the point of being very red and shiny). The left ear seems to be having a much more normal reaction: only painful if touched and only swollen directly around the piercing. The right ear radiates pain every so often and i’m constantly cleaning dried blood off of the earring. The swelling is very hard and may have reduced a bit due to taking advil a couple of times today and some hot compresses yesterday.

My questions: is this normal? I was pierced with a 16G needle and have the same size CBR in it. Do these symptoms sound like my right ear is rejecting the jewelry? What are the best types of jewelry for the healing process? I’m thinking a barbell may be easier to not bump and cause inflammation like that…i may be wrong though.
